This song...Let me tell you guys about this song.

For a long time now, I've been wanting to write a passacaglia* and I've been working on this (off and on) since August 2013, but just couldn't work out what I wanted to do with it. For a long time it was a full string orchestral piece; it wasn't until relatively recently when I discovered H.I.F. Biber's solo passacaglia for violin. I wanted to do something similar, but instead for solo cello. Still, it took a mighty long time to compose something unique enough (surprise surprise).

This represents, by FAR, the most effort I've put into a single song, and that is in terms of both composition AND production. I spent hours writing it, researching relevant compositional styles (I read a LOT of Bach's stuff in particular), learning how to use the cello VST, and fine-tuning all the knobs and variables on it, making sure it sounds as authentic as possible. Seriously, the time spent on it could add up to an entire day.

Of course, it isn't actually a perfect recreation of a cello solo, but I did the best I could. Currently, there are too many limitations to faithfully replicate the real thing.

Suffice it to say, I really hope you all like this. I MIGHT even consider it to be my magnum opus (not that that's saying a whole lot, though).

The awesome cover art, of course, is by none other than cosmicunicorn.devianta...

*A passacaglia is a musical style that has been around since the 1600s. It is traditionally written in triple meter with a bass-ostinato though, perhaps unsurprisingly, contemporary composers are more lax with these rules.
