Soarin always dreamed of being a Wonderbolt, and growing up, he always idolized Spitfire. She was first in all the races, she aced all the tests, she worked hard every day to become an even better flier. All the ponies said she was destined for greatness.... But then, compared to such greatness, how could Soarin ever measure up to such a great flier like her? He was not as fast, not as skilled, and nowhere near as good as she. He simply couldn't keep up.

Perhaps being a Wonderbolt was just a pipe dream, and never meant to be for someone like him. Not like Spitfire, whom everyone knew was the one true best flier, most certainly a Wonderbolt in the making. Soarin would ponder these things when he was alone up in his special place in the clouds, wondering if it was even worth the effort...

Then, one day Spitfire flew up into the same clouds, and sat beside him.

Heart to heart, Soarin found that Spitfire never wanted to overshadow him, she was merely following her own idol. A strong-willed flier, who even when there seemed no hope of victory, even when facing the greatest adversity, even when it appeared the effort was all for nothing, would never, ever give up.

To Spitfire, Soarin was that pony, the pony who she idolized and strived to be like. It didn't matter whether he could fly as fast or was as skilled as she was, because she saw something far more valuable in him than just an amazing flier. She saw an amazing friend... and maybe even more.

So together they flew side by side, and racing through the clouds they chasing down their dreams, occasionally slowing down for one another to lend a helping hoof when they needed it. Because no matter what happened, from here on out, they were in it together.
